Direct TV receivers are the box that receives the signal from your satellite dish and sends it to your TV. Receivers offer two types of picture quality, either high definition (HD) or standard definition (SD). There are also two basic types of receivers, a regular SD or HD receiver or a SD or HD digital video recorder (DVR), which lets you record your favorite TV shows.

If you have a HDTV, then you need a standard HD receiver or a HD DVR. If your TV is SD, then you need a SD receiver or SD DVR. Simple so far?
DVRs allow you to record your favorite programs automatically! Record an entire season of any TV series by setting it up just one time. Take my advice and get a DVR when you order Direct TV! There is an additional monthly charge for the DVR service, but it's worth it!
